This is the time of the year for “classic car shows” around the area. The temperatures are reasonable, so grab your camera and check them out. As an “old car enthusiast” we come in droves from all ages and walks of life. My wife and I love these events as they bring back precious memories of the early 70’s. It is like going back in time. That was the era of the big engines and cruising down Main Street on a weekend night. I spent a lot of that time in my buddy’s 1970 Dodge Challenger hardtop with the windows turned down and the radio turned up listening to the Beach Boys. This red speedster was the R/T model with a 440 Magnum. When he slammed the pedal down you were slammed hard against the seat. He always challenged me to put my hands on the dash board when he took off. I never could reach it. This was the first generation of Challengers from 1970 to 1974 and a big part of the “pony-cars” in that era. We went toe to toe with the fancy Mustangs and Camaros. The Dodge Challenger was really intended to compete against the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Fire bird and it did just that. This sleek and shiny machine was a more “luxury-type” muscle car and the girls just loved it. That was enough for me.
The reason we keep searching for the 70’s Dodge Challenger at the car shows is that they are very hard to find. Sad to say its production ended with the 1974 model. Then after 34 years the Dodge Challenger reappeared in 2008 and it was a beauty and still is. It was presented again as a full-size pony-car. Thank you Dodge! The R/T symbol was back in business and more powerful than ever. You can droll on it if you visit Holt Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM.
The 2015 Dodge Challenger looks somewhat like its older brother in style, but that is where it ends and all the new “bells and whistles” begin in volumes. The performance packages range from 485 hp Hemi V/8 to the awesome Hellcat model. This Hellcat reminds me a lot of the 70 R/T in get up and go. Are you ready…it has a 707 -hp, 6-2 liter super charged V/8. If this is too overboard, you can get a V/6. I won’t tell anyone. The Consumer Report people rate its “customer satisfaction” as very good. It also gave the Dodge Challenger a “check mark” for a recommended vehicle. See… you don’t have to take my word for it.
